Chocolate Chile BBQ Sauce
This Chocolate Chile BBQ Sauce is a unique and flavorful combination of rich cocoa, zesty orange juice, and a kick of chipotle chile powder. The base of sugar and vinegar brings balance to the sauce, while the cocoa powder adds depth and a subtle sweetness. The chipotle chile powder introduces a smoky heat that pairs beautifully with the sweetness of the sauce. This BBQ sauce is perfect for glazing ribs, adding a luxurious and bold flavor that will have everyone asking for more.
Equipment
- Saucepan Used to simmer the ingredients and create the BBQ sauce.
- Basting Brush: To apply the sauce to ribs or other meats evenly.
- Zester or Grater: For adding a touch of orange zest to the finished dish for extra flavor.
Ingredients
- ¾ cup white sugar
- ¾ cup rice vinegar
- ½ cup water
- ½ cup tomato paste
- ¼ cup orange juice
- 2 tbsps unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- ½ tsp kosher salt
- ⅛ tsp chipotle chile powder
Instructions
- Mix sugar and water in a pan and simmer until the sugar dissolves. Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer on low for 30 minutes.
- Paint it on your ribs. One layer is all that is needed. If you wish, put the sauced ribs over high heat to caramelize the sugars a bit, but watch it carefully so it does not burn. Then for a festive touch, grate some orange zest on top. Serve it with a big red wine.
Notes
Usage Tips:
- This sauce is perfect for glazing ribs, but you can also use it on grilled chicken, pork, or even as a dip for roasted vegetables.
- For a deeper flavor, let the sauce cool down and then refrigerate it overnight before using. This allows the flavors to meld.
Storage:
- Store leftover BBQ sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Reheat gently before use.
Customizations:
- If you prefer a spicier sauce, increase the amount of chipotle chile powder to your taste.
- For a richer flavor, consider adding a small amount of dark chocolate or a splash of espresso to intensify the cocoa notes.
